Why Military History Research Centre (Aust.) supports Médecins Sans Frontières

We, as a people, witness through the media and, in some cases, on the ground, the reality inflicted upon social groups, nations and entire regions, the pain and grief of dislocation, starvation and disease, caused by social upheaval and natural disasters. Many of us are separated from the facts and feeling of those so affected by the tyranny of distance and, as the events ‘on the other side of the world’ just become news items to be heard regularly, we can become inured to the realities of the difficulties experienced by others. Sometimes the image of sheer despair on a child’s face or that of a disease ravaged victim of famine and war can jerk us back into the realisation that no matter how far away we might be, we can help.

There are doctors, nursing staff, logisticians and thousands of others who enter into some of the most dangerous environments in the world with one objective in mind; to help where the medical need is greatest. Those people, no matter how professional, expert or brave, cannot do that job of human salvation without themselves receiving assistance. Working out of the limelight and often in extreme danger, they persist with the practice of saving lives. Those people are the staff of Médecins Sans Frontières.

The international character and involvement of Médecins Sans Frontières demonstrates the very nature in the way that humanity can help humanity. The Military History Research Centre (Aust.) encourages everyone who visits this website to donate to the projects run by Médecins Sans Frontières and to assist those in medical need. You don’t have to sell the house, the car or the family inheritance; a single donation will do, or better still, a small repetitive payment for a fixed period will provide help beyond the personal cost. We encourage everyone to go above and beyond, just once, to assist those who have already paid the price and need it the most.
